What is the immigration news? A citizenship scam was shut down this week by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Rome and the Rome Police. An official of the Ministry of the Interior ran the scam by gaining access to the computer system used by authorities to process Italian citizenship applications and is suspected to have granted up to 1500 illegal Italian citizenships to foreign nationals. The President of the Republic has already revoked the citizenship of some of the affected individuals, as their citizenship did not meet the legal guidelines required by Italian law.

• Documents impacted: Italian citizenship.
• Business impact: Companies should be aware of the scam and ensure that all Italian citizenship applications are processed directly through the Department of Civil Liberties and Immigration in the Ministry of the Interior.

Additional information: While the process of obtaining Italian citizenship greatly depends on the foreign national’s individual situation, it typically takes up to four years to process.

BAL Analysis: Companies should be aware of any agencies, advisors or anyone else offering to help foreign nationals obtain Italian citizenship easily, in a very short period of time.
