Speech: Neelie Kroes addresses responsibility for market behavior

On 12 November 2009, the Commission published a speech by Neelie Kroes, Competition Commissioner, on the roles of companies, investors and the Commission in taking responsibility for market behavior in the banking sector.

Kroes stressed the main responsibilities of companies, investors and the Commission. Moreover, Kroes discussed the Commission’s approach to resolving the banking crisis, as well as the role of investors and banks in assuming responsibility for ensuring a healthier banking economy. Kroes further held that the amount of money involved in crisis-related state aid has brought about new ethical responsibilities.

Kroes finished her speech by pointing out how seriously the Commission takes the need for change in the banking sector – and not just in relation to granting state aid. Source: Commission press release 12/11/2009
