On October 27, 2009, the Shanghai Entry Exit Bureau announced an update to the temporary residence registration process, which is a required component of the China work and residence permit application processes. For both new and renewal residence permit applications, foreign passport holders will need Temporary Residence Registration Forms covering 30+ days. Taiwanese nationals holding Tai Bao Zheng documents will need Temporary Residence Registration Forms covering 6+ months for their residence endorsement applications. Individuals staying in hotels will need hotel reservations covering the period stated on their Temporary Residence Registration Forms. Due to the difficulty in obtaining a hotel reservation for 6+ months, BAL recommends that individuals rent apartments for assignments of this duration or longer.
