Law Firm Poll Predicts Negative Trump Impact on M&A

• U.S. President Donald Trump touts record stock markets and planned tax cuts as making him “unbeatable” for 2020. But dealmakers surveyed recently in a poll by law firm Herbert Smith Freehills LLP and The Economist Group say Trump could have a negative impact on M&A over the next one to two years. (Bloomberg)

• Shearman & Sterling, Dechert and McDermott Will & Emery are advising CVS on its proposed $67.5 billion takeover of Aetna, which is getting advice from Davis Polk & Wardwell. (Bloomberg)

• Oral arguments are set to begin today in a defamation suit filed against Trump in New York state by a former contestant of “The Apprentice,” Summer Zervos, who alleges Trump sexually assaulted her in 2007. Trump has called Zervos a “liar.” Her lawyers are Gloria Allred and Allred’s New York-based co-counsel, Mariann Meier Wang. (Washington Post)

• A divided U.S. Supreme Court let Trump’s travel ban take full effect while legal challenges go forward, handing him a major victory and suggesting the court ultimately will uphold the restrictions. (Bloomberg)

• Pay for top corporate lawyers surged almost 10 percent on average between 2015 and 2016 but male general counsel continued to get far more compensation than their female counterparts, according to a recent report. (BLB)
