Access to US Market Simplified by New EU-US Organic Trade Partnership

A partnership between the two largest organic-producers in the world establishes mutual recognition of organic standards. As of 1 June 2012, organic products certified in the European Union can be marketed as organic in the United States and vice versa. Also enhanced regulatory cooperation is expected in the future through the newly established Organics Working Group.

Due to conflicting standards, products derived from animals treated with antibiotics are excluded as well as aquatic animals. This may be disadvantageous to European producers since EU regulations allow antibiotics when treating infected animals. The organic sector in the US and the EU is valued at roughly EUR 40 billion combined.
