As an update to BAL’s December 14th alert regarding the Ministry of Labor Strike in Brazil (see full article here), as well as our initial alert on this topic on November 11th (see full article here), the processing time for work permit applications filed in São Paulo is expected to return to 30 days, which is regarded as the normal processing time. The Ministry of Labor strike was officially concluded as of December 14, 2009, and since its conclusion the Ministry employees have been working to clear the backlog of applications that accumulated in the six week period of the strike.

BAL Comment: The Brazil Chief of Immigration Officer informed BAL that he expects the backlog to be cleared and the processing time to resume to normal as of the beginning of March. Until that time, clients can still expect the processing time of work permit applications in São Paulo to take more than 30 days to process. We will post further alerts on the processing time of these work permit applications as they become available.
