Competition: Commission opens formal antitrust investigation into the "Baltic Max Feeder" scheme for European feeder vessel owners

The Commission opened a formal antitrust investigation into potential restrictive business practices in violation of Article 101 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (“TFEU”) concerning the so-called “Baltic Max Feeder” scheme. Under the scheme, European feeder vessel owners plan to collectively cover the costs of taking vessels out of service. In particular, the Commission will examine whether the explicit aim of the scheme is to reduce the available capacity of feeder vessels in Europe, which could push up charter rates for feeder vessels.
